Star Wars Photo Fantasies

I’ve been meaning to post this for a few month’s now. The artist Cedric Delsaux uses his own pictures of cityscapes as the backgrounds for sci-fi fantasies and then digitally inserts Star Wars film characters into his urban realms. The artist’s Dark Lens series started out with his views of warehouses, harbors, and industrial spaces in the suburbs of Paris. He found those pictures a little too ordinary so he then added Darth Vader, R2-D2, Jabba the Hutt, and other Star Wars figures and vehicles to the settings and presto: they were suddenly fantastic!

From Paris he continued the series in Lille — a medieval city in France — and then Dubai. In case you were wondering, he had the blessing of George Lucas (which has been notoriously tough to get in the past). We Are Luminous Beings?

In “The Empire Strikes Back,” Yoda utters a line which is memorable, quotable, cool and weird: “Luminous beings are we not this crude matter.”
He, and Lucas as the writer of that line, might have been onto something as it is being reported that the human body literally glows, emitting a visible light in extremely small quantities at levels that rise and fall with the day.

Death Star Destroys Enterprise

Sometimes the title of a post says it all. In a true “Worlds Collide” type moment, two of my most beloved Sci-Fi universes meet as the Death Star destroys the USS Enterprise.
“Military force was authorized yesterday after the alleged time travelers and their craft ignored an ultimatum to stop whale poaching.” Gotta love the nod to ST4. Tres cool.

Little known fact – this is my 750th post – yay – which means my average is about 115 posts a year or one every third day overall since I started WGTCTIP2 back in Jan, 2003. This is not a bad habit that I’ve gotten into and while not all of the posts are Shakespearean, they have been entered into the record. I am significant screams the dust speck.

My Holiday Haul

Delightedly this past Saturday, the 4th day of Channukah, 5768, I was given gifts, which, upon further reflection after many minutes of glee, seem to be items one would attribute to a geeky 15 year old. I don’t even care – they are so friggen cool.
Star Wars: A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy is flat out ridiculous in its intricacies – please find a store and find this book. If you have to buy it to see inside, do it. You will not be disappointed. Another book I was given, The Sandman: Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman, is a great collection by one of the best authors out there and Super Mario Galaxy has been named “The greatest Nintendo platformer ever made.” Oh yeah, I also got an outdoor fleece perfect for running, skiing or dog walking and a really nice dinner out at a seafood place on Long Island (cue “The Downeaster Alexa”).
Yup, I’m a geek (among other things) but the people around me seem also to know me best. Thanks all. ‘Nuff said.

A New Sith, or Revenge of the Hope

Keith Martin has brilliantly reconsidered the motivation behind everything that goes on in Star Wars, in light of the nonsense that happens in Episodes 1-3. It’s central thesis is built around how at the end of Revenge of the Sith (RotS), C3PO has his memory wiped but R2D2 keeps his intact. I’ve actually had a few bar room debates about this idea but never put my thoughts down on paper or came up with the level of detailed analysis that Mr. Martin has done. His review is completely serious, outrageously nerdy, and really, really well done. Please note that this is for hardcore Star Wars nerds.

Dork Jeopardy

I was watching Jeopardy’s “Tournament of Champions” tonight and when Alex introduced the first 6 categories at the start of the show I just laughed at the sheer magnitude of the dork factor:

  • Star Trek, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings
  • Action Figures
  • Dinner for one
  • In need of a date
  • Still living with “Mom” and “Dad”
  • You have no life

The writers must have had a field day!
In honor of this great night for geeks, here are the 5 questions in the first category:

  • $200: A council that takes place at Rivendell is central to its plot
  • $400: In its lore, a Bagoran wormhole leads to the Gamma Quadrant
  • $600: This one lent its name to a defensive weapons system that many felt was a pie-in-the-sky fantasy

The Vader Sessions

Akjak used snipits of dialogue uttered by James Earl Jones in a variety of different movies to create a new edit of Star Wars IV: A New Hope. It is absolutely fantastic and its really, really funny. I think it will make a great calling card if one is needed. I know the clip is sort of long but you have to stay with it. I’ve listened to it 3 times now and I keep listening to it and I keep catching different movies. So far, my favorite that I’ve recognized is a “Coming to America” line.
Since most of us, or those that read my site, know SW so well, just pop on your headphones and listen to the audio if you have to work and can’t watch 10 minutes of video right now. My favorite parts are from minute 4 to 4:30 and from minute 7 until the very end – those parts are extremely ridiculous. Watch out for Mr. Long Island too and enjoy!

Happy Friday Star Wars Edition!

I saw this scene where Darth Vader has to break the Death Star destruction news to the Emperor the other week on Robot Chicken and found it hilarious. Today, it showed up on Chris’s site. I didn’t realize that there was a clip of it at YouTube but I should have. I swear, You Tube is getting to be almost eBay-esque. The same way that one automatically assumes a product, no matter what kind, is available on eBay (Snoopy Sno-cone maker perchance?), now one should start to assume that a clip of whatever he/she wants will be on You Tube. As for Robot Chicken, that show is seriously going to carry my Sunday nights after the Sopranos bow off because something good on TV has to ease me back into the working week. Enjoy!

Another Winter Olympics 2014 Entry: Hoth

This candidate city web site for the 2014 Hoth Winter Olympics is pure genius.

Whether it involves American Idol or fallen idols (Michelle Kwan and Bode Miller) it appears the Olympics are getting less and less popular with the American public.
In order to revive the Winter Games and to help NBC out of their rating nosedive we devised the following plan that would grab a hold of the public consciousness here in the US as well as viewers around the world.
We believe the 2014 XXII Winter Olympiad (the 2010 Games have already been awarded to Vancouver) should be hosted and held on the ice planet made famous in Star Wars Episode V…Hoth
