Happy Birthday Theodor Geisel

Posted on

If you aren’t familiar with Theo Geisel, maybe you know him as Dr. Seuss. I am reading plenty of Seuss books these days and flat out love his rhyme scheme. If I could walk around all day talking like either Yoda or Dr. Seuss, I think I would choose Dr. Seuss.
Today was his birthday so to honor this auspicious date, Google remade its logo Seuss-style:

Even though he passed away in 1991, I have a feeling that his legacy will live on for a long, long, long time.

All Your Base Are Belong To Google

Posted on

Is Google outsmarting everyone?. It is quite possible.
Financially, the $2k that I didn’t invest in Apple in 2003 and the $2k I didn’t invest in Google when it debuted are worth around $25k total right now. Apple has gone up about 10x since when I thought about buying it and Google has gone up about 7x. Knowing that I would have only made “small” bets on these companies, and knowing that I would have 99% sold my stakes in them when they simply doubled or tripled, are the only things keeping me from kicking myself on a daily basis.
Some investment decisions should be made by your gut and invest in Apple when the first generation iPod came out and investing in Google when they pulled their dutch auction IPO were no-brainers. I think that is why they are called “no-brainers” – because if you use your brain, you’ll probably think yourself out of making the right decision.

Texting "GOOGL"

Posted on

Topping my “I should have bought this stock at the IPO” list for the past few weeks has been Google. One of the reasons is because it continues to release cool apps. Take Google SMS for instance, which enables you to send queries as text messages over your mobile phone or device and easily get precise answers to your questions. No links. No web pages. Just text – and the information you’re looking for. Try the demo and see how you can:

  • Get local business listings when you’re on the road.
  • Obtain driving directions to get from point A to point B.
  • Find movie showtimes and theater locations.
  • Check weather conditions and 4-day forecasts.
  • Study the latest stock quotes.
  • Get quick answers to straightforward questions.
  • Compare online product prices with ones you find in retail stores.
  • Look up dictionary definitions.

Its pretty cool. If you are stuck in traffic during the holidays, play around. Tangentially related, I wonder if “texting” an approved way of referring to sending someone a text message, as in “I’m texting it to you now.” What do you think? I vote “yes.”

W Got Google bombed

Posted on

Yesterday, Jessie sent me a classic google bomb and while I have seen it before, it continues to make me laugh.

  1. Type in the word “failure” into Google’s search box
  2. Click on the “I’m Feeling Lucky!” button
  3. See what happens

If case you are scratching your head over the term, here is a definition:

Google bomb – a certain attempt to influence the ranking of a given page in results returned by the Google search engine. Due to the way that Google’s PageRank algorithm works, a page will be ranked higher if the sites that link to that page all use consistent anchor text. A Google bomb is created if a large number of sites link to the page in this manner. Google bomb is used both as a verb and a noun.

Google bombing is also why you see stupid non-sensical comments advertising all sorts of naughty things (you know, sex, drugs and not too often rock n’ roll) on my site almost daily. These are known as comment spam and they have forced me scrub my site daily which annoys me to no end. All comment spammers should die a painful death followed by spending an eternity in hell. Wow. I went dark there for a minute didn’t I? Speaking of dark, I wonder which government agency picked up this post because of the title. Maybe there is now a file on me. Just food for thought.

Homage to Frank Lloyd Wright

Posted on

Google gives a shout out to FLW by displaying “Fallingwater” and the Guggenheim Museum on its home page:

While Jessie does not necessarily love museums, I can always get her excited about going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by telling her we’ll stop by the Frank Lloyd Wright room. It is by far her favorite part of the museum and its one of my favorites too. The fact that it happens to be next to Arms and Armor? Well, that just makes it even better.

Homage to Leo

I went to Google’s homepage today and this is what I saw:

Aside from being the inspiration for a book that has been on the NY Times bestseller list for 107 weeks, let me quickly run down this scientist/inventor/artist’s achievements so that you can feel even worse about watching TV and ordering in last night:

>> Described as the archetype of the “Renaissance man” and as a universal genius
>> Painted the Last Supper
>> Painted the Mona Lisa
>> Was left-handed and used mirror writing throughout his life. Explainable by fact that it is easier to pull a quill pen than to push it; by using mirror-writing, the left-handed writer is able to pull the pen from right to left.
>> Developed the world’s first robot
>> Recorded some 13,000 pages of notes and drawings, which fuse art and science
>> Considered to be the beginner of caricature due to the fact that he actively searched for bodily deformed people to paint them

Just thought I’d share in case you google today from your toolbar only and bypass its homepage.
