Brian "The Astrophysist" May

I loved Brian May, the lead guitarist from “Queen” before but now I love him even more. It seems that being a rock god isn’t enough for him: he wants to finish the astrophysics degree which he put aside when “Queen” started to take off. While his thesis is titled “Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud,” I know I would enjoy it more if somehow he worked in “Under Pressure” or “Another One Bites The Dust” into the title.

Brian May is completing his doctorate in astrophysics, more than 30 years after he abandoned his studies to form the rock group Queen.
The 60-year-old guitarist and songwriter said he plans to submit his thesis, “Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud,” to supervisors at Imperial College London within the next two weeks.
May was an astrophysics student at Imperial College when Queen, which included Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor, was formed in 1970. He dropped his doctorate as the glam rock band became successful.
Queen were one of Britain’s biggest music groups in the 1970s, with hits including “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You.”
After Mercury’s death in 1991, May recorded several solo albums, including 1998’s “Another World.” But his interest in astronomy continued, and he co-wrote “Bang! The Complete History of the Universe,” which was published last year.
He was due to finish carrying out astronomical observations at an observatory on the island of La Palma, in Spain’s Canary Islands, on Tuesday, the observatory said.
May told the British Broadcasting Corp. that he had always wanted to complete his degree.
“It was unfinished business,” he said. “I didn’t want an honorary Ph.D. I wanted the real thing that I worked for.”

I logged into my school email this morning and saw a note with “Work-life balance workshop – Canceled” as the subject line so I just had to open it. It read:

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, I am going to cancel the work-life balance workshop for next weekend. Given the end of semester work load, it was too difficult for enough people to make a Saturday session. Thanks again to everyone who expressed interest!

Bingo Is Under Water

First New Orleans and now Binghamton. All of my favorite cities are getting flooded these days. The NY Times has an article about how badly hit my alma mater’s city is right now which I posted after the jump. I wonder if the Sports Bar is totally and utterly under water…
What to Do? For Now, Sit Back and Watch the Water Rise

BINGHAMTON, N.Y., June 28 — As the muddy, turbulent waters of the Chenango River rushed toward this city’s downtown, Anton Lucas knew exactly what to do: Move the furniture and tools from the cellar to the first floor, grab some wine and a lawn chair, and sit on a patch of grass some 50 yards away, watching the water rise.
Mr. Lucas, 54, left work early on Tuesday so he could prepare for the inevitable. His house, an elegant Tudor that sits just feet from where the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers meet, had been flooded once before, he said, in April 2005, catching him by surprise. He lost $50,000 in clothes and furniture then. This time would be different.
“I’ve been partying all day,” Mr. Lucas, a self-employed general contractor, said as night fell on Wednesday, still wearing the yellow T-shirt and shorts he had on the night before. “All I can do right now is wait. Then I’ll go fix the damage, just like I did before.”
Along the northern bank of the Susquehanna, from Binghamton to Johnson City and Endicott, two neighboring communities upriver, flooding spared hardly a home and thousands needed to be evacuated. In some cases, the water climbed front steps and flowed into kitchens and living rooms, looking like chocolate milk in a blender.
Outside an apartment building on Riverside Drive, a blue toy car bobbed in the water while a man in galoshes carried two boxes on his shoulder up the front steps of a tidy brick house across the street. At Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to the west, two doctors wheeled a woman into an ambulance, which then whisked her away to a hospital on dry, higher ground.
Sharon Landon, 48, a nurse in the hospital’s oncology hospice, said the river began to creep into the ground floor of Our Lady of Lourdes early in the morning and slowly inundated the cafeteria, pharmacy, lab and the hospital’s power plant, which meant the electricity had to be shut down.
For hours, she said, doctors and nurses worked to discharge the patients who were well enough to go home and prepare those in need of care for a quick move. “I have water in my own cellar, three to four inches, I’m told,” Ms. Landon said as she slogged out of work around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, her face glistening with sweat, and carrying a raincoat and galoshes in a ripped plastic bag.
There was, however, a certain festive feel in the air, with children and adults biking and skating downhill, toward the river, just because that was the thing to do. Some people carried cameras and posed for photographs by the Memorial Street Bridge across the Susquehanna, which sat partly under water late on Wednesday.
Lt. John P. Shea of the city’s Police Department said that the city was no stranger to flooding, but that this was the worst he could remember. He predicted that the waters would rise until Thursday, and that more people might have to leave their homes.
Then, “just like last year, and in the years before that, the rivers will go back to their normal levels,” Lieutenant Shea said, “as if nothing this bad ever really happened.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, going to Bingo was a good value and if there one thing that I’ve been programmed to do since birth is to recognize a good value. It seems that Bingo is now the 9th best public university in the country according to US News and World Report (see below).

ID Denied

A Pennsylvania judge has prevented a public school district from teaching Intelligent Design in biology classes. U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III wrote, “Our conclusion today is that it is unconstitutional to teach ID as an alternative to evolution in a public school science classroom.” All I can say is “Thank the lord.”

That reminds me – I need to hit up the Darwin exhibit at the AMNH. It closes at the end of May so I have some time.

Judge Bars ‘Intelligent Design’ From Pa. Classes

HARRISBURG, Pa. — “Intelligent design” cannot be mentioned in biology classes in a Pennsylvania public school district, a federal judge said Tuesday, ruling in one of the biggest courtroom clashes on evolution since the 1925 Scopes trial.

Dover Area School Board members violated the Constitution when they ordered that its biology curriculum must include the notion that life on Earth was produced by an unidentified intelligent cause, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III said. Several members repeatedly lied to cover their motives even while professing religious beliefs, he said.

The school board policy, adopted in October 2004, was believed to have been the first of its kind in the nation.

“The citizens of the Dover area were poorly served by the members of the Board who voted for the ID Policy,” Jones wrote.

The board’s attorneys had said members were seeking to improve science education by exposing students to alternatives to Charles Darwin’s theory that evolution develops through natural selection. Intelligent-design proponents argue that the theory cannot fully explain the existence of complex life forms.

The plaintiffs challenging the policy argued that intelligent design amounts to a secular repackaging of creationism, which the courts have already ruled cannot be taught in public schools. The judge agreed.
“We find that the secular purposes claimed by the Board amount to a pretext for the Board’s real purpose, which was to promote religion in the public school classroom,” he wrote in his 139-page opinion.

The Dover policy required students to hear a statement about intelligent design before ninth-grade biology lessons on evolution. The statement said Charles Darwin’s theory is “not a fact” and has inexplicable “gaps.” It refers students to an intelligent-design textbook, “Of Pandas and People,” for more information.

Jones wrote that he wasn’t saying the intelligent design concept shouldn’t be studied and discussed, saying its advocates “have bona fide and deeply held beliefs which drive their scholarly endeavors.”
But, he wrote, “our conclusion today is that it is unconstitutional to teach ID as an alternative to evolution in a public school science classroom.”

The controversy divided the community and galvanized voters to oust eight incumbent school board members who supported the policy in the Nov. 8 school board election.

Said the judge: “It is ironic that several of these individuals, who so staunchly and proudly touted their religious convictions in public, would time and again lie to cover their tracks and disguise the real purpose behind the ID Policy.”

The board members were replaced by a slate of eight opponents who pledged to remove intelligent design from the science curriculum.

Eric Rothschild, the lead attorney for the families who challenged the policy, called the ruling “a real vindication for the parents who had the courage to stand up and say there was something wrong in their school district.”

Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., which represented the school board, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

The dispute is the latest chapter in a long-running debate over the teaching of evolution dating back to the famous 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, in which Tennessee biology teacher John T. Scopes was fined $100 for violating a state law that forbade teaching evolution. The Tennessee Supreme Court reversed his conviction on a technicality, and the law was repealed in 1967.

Jones heard arguments in the fall during a six-week trial in which expert witnesses for each side debated intelligent design’s scientific merits. Other witnesses, including current and former school board members, disagreed over whether creationism was discussed in board meetings months before the curriculum change was adopted.

The case is among at least a handful that have focused new attention on the teaching of evolution in the nation’s schools.

Earlier this month, a federal appeals court in Georgia heard arguments over whether evolution disclaimer stickers placed in a school system’s biology textbooks were unconstitutional. A federal judge in January ordered Cobb County school officials to immediately remove the stickers, which called evolution a theory, not a fact.

In November, state education officials in Kansas adopted new classroom science standards that call the theory of evolution into question.

Sobering Stat of the Day

According to the most recent data from the National Science Foundation, 1.2 million of the world’s 2.8 million university degrees in science and engineering in 2000 were earned by Asian students in Asian universities, with only 400,000 granted in the United States. That means the US of A supplies less than 15% of all degrees.

With China and India fast on the US’s heals, we’ve got to do a better job as a nation of not only educating our future innovators and leaders but making them want to learn these subjects. Math and science are a hard sell but we’ve got to be able to close the deal or else we risk a future where America no longer leads but follows.

A School Named After Me

A few years back, I first found about Lipson Community College which is located in jolly old England. Tonight, being totally unable to sleep, I decided to google it and man am I weired out. I grew up on Plymouth Place. Lipson Community College is located in Plymouth, England. Here is a description of the school straight from a job posting:

“Lipson is a thriving Specialist Community Arts College on the eastern edge of Plymouth. Ofsted described the College as “an outstanding ethos for learning.”

Even though the web site sucks, my sister will happy to know that the school that carries our name is focused on the arts as she is at SUNY New Paltz studying how to harness her talents to become the next Michelangelo, or at least Raphael. I really want to get a college tee shit. I think that would be cool, that is unless they are ugly, which would be a shame for an arts school.

Names and places keep following me around between the US and UK. For instance, when I lived in London in 1998, I lived in an area of North London called Highgate. I loved Highgate and will be back there in less than 3 weeks – I cannot wait! Highgate is located on the right hand side of Hampstead Heath, the huge urban yet untamed park in the northern part of London, which is just about 800 acres in size. After college, when I moved into Manhattan from Long Island, I wound up in the Upper East Side living in a building called “The Highgate.” Needless to say, the UES is in the northern part of Manhattan and its on the right hand side of NY’s huge urban Central Park, which happens to be 843 acres in size. Double weird.

Wait, it gets better and spookier. The town I grew up in on Long Island, the one where Plymouth Place lays is called East Meadow. The part of Central Park that is closest to my old apartment in “The Highgate” is called, yes, you guessed it, the East Meadow.

Underfunding Leave No Child Behind

The Bush Administration has passed legislation called the Leave No Child Behind Act which creates federal standards on education policy and results. While good in name, it is in fact leaving more children behind than before it was passed because it has been incredibly and woefully underfunded. Standards are in place that most states of no hope of living up to. Money that was promised has not and almost will not appear. Here is a run-down of what the NY tri-state area didn’t get and what the 3 “crucial” swing states didn’t get:

NY TRI-STATE AREA:

New York did not get $966 million in public school funding last year promised by Congress and the President, including $664 million for extra academic support for low-income students, $73 million for critical after-school programs, and $24 million to raise teacher quality.

New Jersey did not get $209 million in public school funding last year promised by Congress and the President, including $122 million for extra academic support for low-income students, $15 million for critical after-school programs, and $7 million to raise teacher quality.

Connecticut did not get $80 million in public school funding last year promised by Congress and the President, including $47 million for extra academic support for low-income students, $6 million for critical after-school programs, and $3 million to raise teacher quality.

SWING STATES:

Florida did not get $500 million in public school funding last year promised by Congress and the President, including $313 million for extra academic support for low-income students, $35 million for critical after-school programs, and $17 million to raise teacher quality.

Ohio did not get $310 million in public school funding last year promised by Congress and the President, including $196 million for extra academic support for low-income students, $23 million for critical after-school programs, and $12 million to raise teacher quality.

Pennsylvania did not get $337 million in public school funding last year promised by Congress and the President, including $217 million for extra academic support for low-income students, $25 million for critical after-school programs, and $12 million to raise teacher quality.

1 in 10 Bingo Students Marry Another Bingo Student

Here is a link to a Binghamton University Pipe Dream (campus newspaper) article that talks about alumni marriages. The most interesting stat is that that 1 in 10 BU students eventually marry another BU student. I’m sure that the percentage (10%) is much higher for the Jewish alumni as I know of 4 couples who met at Bingo in my immediate social circle, 7/8 of them Jews with 1 half-Jew, who are or probably will be getting married.
