Yo Joe!

Posted on

2009 is shaping up to known as “Year of the Joe” as there will be a new animated series titled GI Joe: Resolute, a full length live action blockbuster movie titled GI Joe: Rise of Cobra and a new Hasbro toy line of GI Joe figures. Sweet. I have kept my VCR in large part so I can watch the tapes I have of the 80’s cartoon (I have the first 100 episodes and the Cobra-La movie on seven tapes that I bought off of eBay about a decade ago). Yes, I love GI Joe that much.
Regarding the cartoon, esteemed comic writer Warren Ellis is penning the script for the new Joe series which will all of one hour long – there will be 10 five minute episodes and one 10 minute concluding episode of this dark adult themed “Ghost in the Shell” inspired cartoon. The bootleg trailer of Snake Eyes slicing open Cobra Soldiers is pretty bad ass but no one knows yet if it will be released as webisodes, TV episodes or straight to DVD and I frankly do not care.
Regarding the movie, while the fanboy universe is currently panning it, I have to say that the Snake Eyes costume looks, to reuse a phrase, pretty bad ass and I’m keeping my finders crossed. The Wikipedia entry reports that the film is an origin story set 10 years in the future, showing the rise of the Cobra Organization. The director Stephen Sommers said, “For people who know nothing about it, it’ll make sense. And to people who love this stuff, it’ll show where they all came from.”
Know you know all about the cool Joe stuff coming and remember, as Duke, Flint, Lady Jay and others always said, “Knowing is half the battle” The other half I suppose is actually watching these goodies when they debut.

Happy Friday Star Wars Edition!

Posted on

I saw this scene where Darth Vader has to break the Death Star destruction news to the Emperor the other week on Robot Chicken and found it hilarious. Today, it showed up on Chris’s site. I didn’t realize that there was a clip of it at YouTube but I should have. I swear, You Tube is getting to be almost eBay-esque. The same way that one automatically assumes a product, no matter what kind, is available on eBay (Snoopy Sno-cone maker perchance?), now one should start to assume that a clip of whatever he/she wants will be on You Tube. As for Robot Chicken, that show is seriously going to carry my Sunday nights after the Sopranos bow off because something good on TV has to ease me back into the working week. Enjoy!

Miyazaki Thursdays on TCM

Posted on

All this month on Turner Classic Movies, Thursday nights have been devouted to Hayao Miyazaki, a man who has been hailed as the “Japanese Walt Disney.” The first Thursday of the month they aired Princess Mononoke (which I’ve seen many, many times and love) and Spirited Away (which I am in the process of watching). I missed the 2 films from last Thursday, 1 of which “NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind” is my friend Gil’s favorite by Miyazaki, because I didn’t know it was “Miyazaki Month” until I started to watch Spirited Away last night. I quicked grabbed my remote and have scheduled My Neighborhood Totoro and Porco Rosso for taping this Thursday. I cannot wait to watch these well. The following Thursday they are showing 2 movies, Only Yesterday and Pom Poko, he produced that were directed by Isao Takahata. I’ll tape and watch those as well.

I’ve been a huge Miyazaki fan ever since I saw Princess Mononoke but have ben lazy in renting and watching his other films. This past summer, the MoMA held a Miyazaki exhibition and all of his films were screened over a 4 day period. I was super psyched to go but unfortunately, the exhibition happened to exactly coincide with the end of my parents’ 30 or so year marriage. My sister was staying with me while my family imploded and needless to say, neither of us made it to the museum. Its funny; on top of all the other reasons I was upset that weekend, I was upset that I missed out on seeing all these flicks. Now, when its cold and gross and I don’t want to leave my apartment, I have some fantastic movies just sitting around waiting to be watched. I can’t wait!

Hey – It’s the Holidays

Posted on

Outcast’s “Hey Ya” has not surprisingly been chosen as the song to feature on two good holiday related flash movies that I’ve seen recently.

The first movie splices up the Charlie Brown Christmas Special (which I missed this year, something that I’m actually sad about) so that the children are singing and dancing to “Hey Ya.” It is very well done.

The second movie is a low-budget flash movie that features a “Hannukah” song sung to the tune of, yes, you guessed it, “Hey Ya.” It is kind of well done because the animation is pretty poor but the music is snappy.

Enjoy.

“…And Knowing’s Half the Battle”

Posted on

FROM EBAUMSWORLD:
“Remember how at the end of every G.I. Joe Cartoon they would have some short educational segment and it would always end with the line “And Knowing Is Half The Battle”? These clips are dubbed over with new dialogue and even some of the animation is changed and remixed. The result is so hilarious that I almost wet my pants the first time I saw them. Watch the videos closely to catch it all. If you don’t get it, don’t worry. It is meant to be random and goofy. We want to thank Fensler Films for creating these videos.
